現存する世界最大のGT！？65ｋｇ＋―2ｋｇ
ポッパーは上手く、自分のイメージ通りの放物線を描いて、小島の近くの浅瀬に落ちた。ジュボー！一度目の
ポンピングの時、近くの海面がかすかに盛り上がったように見えた。風の音も人の声も全てが消えた。ジュボー！
2回目のポンピングでルアーは流れの淵にかかった。
「水深28ｍ」船長が言う。
それを反復するように、釣友の中元さんが28ｍと大声で
言ってくれた。ジュボー！ルアーは大きな泡の中を悶えるように動いて止まった。直後、巨大な影がルアーの下に
かすめた様に見えた。けれど次の瞬間、
海面からルアーが消し飛んだ。
ロッドに強い衝撃が走る前に、体は反応している。
15ｋｇのドラグのリールから、ＰＥ10号はいとも簡単に
飛び出し始め、その時ぼくはくの字に曲げている腕を
思い切り胸にひきつけながらリールを巻いたが、
ハンドルなど動くわけが
無い。「フォロー！」と、ぼくが叫ぶ前に船長は素早く
反応していた。叫びと同時にボートは根の横
を回り込もうとしているＧＴの真上に乗った。ラインは
その分、巻き取れた。
今度はそのまま「バック！」と叫び、ボートでＧＴを
根の横から引き離そうと思った。
ところが、こいつは、そこから更に根に沿って
泳ぎだしたのである。引きずり出せないと思った。
瞬間、ぼくは再び、「フォロー！」と叫んでいた。
ボートはＧＴに近づいたけれど、勢い余って、
小島の浅瀬に乗ってしまった。ＧＴは、根から壁に沿って
深みを流れに乗って走り出した。「ラインが擦れる！
擦れる！」と心の中で叫んで、ラインをフリーにする。
浮力のある太いＰＥラインは根の壁に沿って柔らかく
延びていった。
「バック！」ぼくの大声と共に船長は後進にギアを
入れたけれど、風と潮でボートは思うように動かない。
ぼくはロッドをねかせ、スプールを手でサミングしながら
根とボートの動きに合わせてＰＥラインの出方を調整し
根擦れを交わした。それでも、ボートが浅瀬を脱出した時
に、ＧＴが再び深みから浮き上がり潮下の浅瀬を
猛スピードで泳ぎだしたのが見えた。行く先には
水深1ｍ足らずの沈み岩がある。大魚はその向こうへ、
逃げ込もうとしている。ＰＥラインの糸ふけを計算に
入れながらベールを返すタイミングは、大魚がまさに
岩を乗り越えようとする時なのである。0.0何秒の時が
長い時間に感じられた。
「今だ！」と思った瞬間、リールのベールを返すと、
今まで緩やかに延びていたＰＥラインが張り始め、
針金のように一直線に延びた時、大魚は岩の上で
1回転して尾鰭を水面から飛び出させてもんどり打った。
ぼくは、さらにドラグを上げて、20ｋｇ近くにした。
魚を引きずり寄せて、7ｍの瀬を交わし、浮かしに
かかった。ぼくの肉体は、それでも疲れも痛みも
感じることは無い。巨大なＧＴがボート際に浮いた。
特注と言っていた大きなネットが海に入ったが、
大魚が大きすぎてネットに入らない。「すくえ！」という
誰かの声に後押しされる形で、無理やりネットにＧＴが
入った。4人がかりでボートのデッキに引きずり上げた。
尾の付け根のセイゴ部は、両手の平を合わせても
余った。そして、このＧＴの目はビッグマウス200という
特大ルアーの口部の大きさとほとんど同じか、
更に大きい。膝に載せてもらうと、重さで抱いていることが
苦痛になった。
「60ｋｇオーバーだ！」と、自分でも確信して声に出た。
「量れないか？」
「量れない・・・」
「わかった。リリースすることを優先にしよう！」一通り
写真を撮ってリリースした。
胸鰭がぼくの腕と同じ1ｍ近くあるＧＴは、
ゆっくりと泳いでコモドの海に消えた。

“The Biggest
GT around 65kg in the World”
The Popper fell in the shallows of a small Island and bobbed gently
in the swell.
With a pump of my rod the popper burst into life.
I focussed on producing the
perfect action the wind
and sea seemed to stand still and everything seemed quite.
With the second pump of my rod the popper hang on the edge
of the reef and paused,
I called out
“How deep is it”
both my fishing partner (Mr Nakamoto)
and the captain yelled back 28 meters.
I paused again in order to obtain a bigger bubble
but as I did a
huge shadow skimed under the popper
then the sea seemed
to part as my popper vanished from
the surface. The
tranquillity of the moment was soon replaced with
a frantic scramble as I felt the rod load and strain under the weight of a
mighty GT.
PE 10 line began to peel from the spool with 15kg of drag
the fish barley knew it was hooked and charged towards the reef. I lifted the rod and cranked the
reel in an attempt to gain some line but the line continued to leave the
reel at an astonishing rate.
I yelled to the Skipper to follow but having already anticipated
the Giant GT he was manoeuvring the boat between
the fish and Island. Using the speed of the boat I took the
opportunity to gain some line back and sensing the change in direction and
pull the GT headed out from the Island and began to dive
alone
the jagged reef edges.
I called to the skipper “backward” and with a quick shuffle
of the gears the
boat strained to push through the swell
and current. As the fish motored towards the deep edges
I could feel the
braid scrap and rub on the coral
and in a desperate attempt to avoid being busted off
I opened the
bail arm and free spooled the fish.
The thick PE line continues to peel from the reel
and I thumbed the line in an attempt to maintain some
control and feel.
The captain moved the boat to deeper water to reduce
the angle and
avoid the sharp reef edges.
Once over the fish I could see that I was free
from the drop off but was heading back
to the safety and shelter of the island.
The fish moved quickly over the coral into water no more
than a meter
deep. As the GT reached a large rock
I decided that is was now or never and flicked the bail
arm over and increased the drag to 20kg.
PE line tightened like wire on the spool as the GT felt
the strain of the rod, his tail broke the surface
and he rolled on his side. Using the power of my rod
I dragged the fish to deeper water and held his head
to the surface. As he lay by the boat the skipper tried
to scoop the Mighty GT up in a custom made net although
the net only managed to fit the GT’s
head.
Assisted by three others the Mighty fish was pulled
on board and layed on the deck.
The Giant GT’s eyes were almost
the same
size as the Fisherman’s 200gm big mouth popper
that hung from its jaws and the pectoral fins were t
he length of my arms.
I asked the crew if they could lift the mighty fish onto
my knees for a
quick photo. The weight was almost unbearable
and I had to lay
the fish back on the deck. As the scales toped
out at 60kg’s we released the fish without ever knowing its
true weight but all estimates were in excess of 60kgs.
Gently the giant fish was slid back into the water
and as the oxygen again flowed through his gills he slowly
swam off from sight.
